This was up from a revised figure of 58.7 in December.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="para2"&gt;A series record high for output followed strong demand from both domestic and overseas markets, which was inspired by new product launches, successful promotional activity and client restocking. Export orders were particularly strong, with high interest UK goods coming in from the US, Scandinavia and Australia.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="para2"&gt;While the survey found some increases in employment as companies look to work through backlogs, Jonathan Lee says, in reality, these are minimal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="para2"&gt;“Unfortunately the improved manufacturing PMI figures have not translated into a large upswing in recruitment in the manufacturing sector,” he said. “Currently, most manufacturers are able to respond to increased demand without recruiting, in large part due to spare capacity built up during the recession. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="para2"&gt;“As margins have been squeezed, many manufacturers have looked to recruit specialist operations managers who are tasked solely with reducing costs and lead times. The focus is on recruiting people who allow manufacturers to improve their service, as in the short-term, this is the only way they can increase the price they charge.”&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="para2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He said that a lot of manufacturers are currently in the middle of new product development programmes now that the winter of the downturn has all but thawed and this should mean that firm will be looking to recruit advanced engineers as their projects reach the production stage.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="para2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, they will face competition for the best candidates, especially among the younger generation, he warned.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="para2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Input and output prices were up for a majority of manufacturers in January as demand heightened and supplied lead times suffered as well.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="para2"&gt;David Noble, CEO of CIPS, said: “Manufacturers will be watching intently to see how the Government and Bank of England move to tackle the issue of rising inflation, and hoping for stimulation to encourage continued growth in a sector which is currently leading the way towards UK recovery. With agency after agency claiming they are different, claiming they do X, Y &amp;amp; Z - and the reality is they do nothing apart from take up my time. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial;"&gt;Scott, Dawn &amp;amp; the team at Jon Lee are different though; clear, concise and to the point. Although no official offer has been made as of yet - I can say that with the teams help it has been a well managed and well communicated process with the right level of feedback. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The rule of thumb is that I would hardly ever pass on a colleagues details to an agency for fear of subjecting a colleague/friend to the same magnitude of time wasting nonsense I have undergone. font-size: x-small;"&gt;Jonathan Lee Recruitment carried out its second survey of contractors earlier this year to measure their views on the service and communication provided to them by the company. Here we look at the results and find out whether the changes made in response to the last survey in 2008 have had an impact.&lt;img align="right" border="0" height="158" hspace="6" src="http://www.jonlee.co.uk/Newsletter/autumn-candidate-2010/Images/survey.gif" vspace="3" width="201" /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The results of the 2010 survey are promising, showing that the high scores from last time - for overall satisfaction on level and regularity of communications, as well as the customer service they receive - have held up well with over 90% of respondents feeling both these areas meet or exceed expectations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;97% feel that the recruitment function is proficient or extremely proficient and a further 65% feel it is knowledgeable. Meanwhile, contractors are happy with the jobs they have been placed into with 88% feeling their position meets or exceeds their expectations and 97% state that if they wished to look for another role they would use Jonathan Lee Recruitment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some areas identified within the last survey needed attention. Changes were made to address these areas; improvements were made to the communications coming from us; and a dedicated contractor relations team was put in place, focussed solely on making sure that any enquiries and problems raised by contractors are dealt with satisfactorily and speedily.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These changes seem to be making an impact. 97% of respondents rate our communications as effective or very effective (up from 93% last time) and the percentage of respondents who feel they don’t receive effective assistance when choosing the best payment option fell from 15 to 9 per cent - indeed, 91% feel that their expectations are met or exceeded in this area.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Marc Sanchez, Regional Manager, Southern Operations, commented: “We are committed to exceeding expectations wherever we can by continuously improving our offering. That’s why it’s key that we talk to all our customers to regularly find out what they think of the service they receive.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“We made some changes based on the results of the last survey and we’re delighted to see the results of these coming through. Some  countries such as China and Brazil, and more recently India, recovered  relatively quickly whereas others such as Russia have been slower to recover.  The UK market was hit quite hard initially but the scrappage scheme promoted a  recovery. Since the cessation of the scheme in March 2010 sales have declined in  two consecutive months (July and August) but remain higher than in 2009 for the  year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The recession resulted in significantly reduced  production and temporary plant stoppages by most of the Original Equipment  Manufacturers (OEMs). The supply chain was unable to benefit from efficiencies  of periodic stoppage and had to run inefficiently at levels significantly below  capacity. This has been very painful for most companies leading to shop floor  redundancies, although companies did try harder than in previous recessions to  avoid a cull and retain as many people as possible using creative ways to reduce  employment costs; such as shorter hours, sabbaticals, temporary wage/salary cuts  and pension freezes. Whilst production was hit badly, R&amp;amp;D continued to  operate with minimal reductions in staff albeit with a freeze on further  recruitment.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The effect of all this was a massive reduction in the market for permanent  staff. Whilst some industries such as defence and public sector were hardly  affected, automotive recruitment levels dropped like a stone. The recovery was  stalled by the general election and uncertainty about the policy direction of  the incoming Conservative/Liberal coalition.
